I hate constitutionalists. For real. Who thinks that the constitution is a static document? It isn’t. The way the framers wrote the constitution made it possible to amend. But you get these people who claim that the constitution is meant to stay the same. If that was the case, women wouldn’t be able to vote. Neither would African Americans. Truth is, they still could be slaves.
I have a friend who honestly thinks that anything after the 12th amendment is bad. She claims that there is a scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants that tells us so. I have a really hard time believing that God would be against something as fundamental as basic human rights for everyone. But she constantly posts on her Facebook about restoring the constitution to its former glory. (i.e. getting rid of such silly amendments as the 13th which abolished slavery or the 15th and 19th which created universal suffrage or the 26th which lowered the voting age to 18.) What pisses me off the most is that she is 18 and a woman. So if the amendments hadn’t been made she wouldn’t be able to vote, a right that she relishes. I can’t stand it. I want to pitch her out on her head when it comes to politics. I love her to death but her politics drive me crazy. The fact that someone could be so ignorant boggles my mind. What makes it worse in my mind is that she uses religion to justify her ignorance. If she was just plain stupid it wouldn’t bother me quite so much. But her ignorance is from her indoctrination at the hands of a neo-conservative educator whose school isn’t even accredited. I wish that there was a way for me to retroactively save her—go back in time and keep her out of the Kimber Academy. But there isn’t. So I am left to bang my little head against the brick-hard wall of arguments that Dr. Kimber has brainwashed into her pretty little head.
